Borneo Sucker (Hillstream Loach)

A unique, algae-loving fish for cooler, fast-flow tanks

Borneo Suckers are fascinating little fish known for their flat, ray-like bodies and ability to cling to glass, rocks, and decor. Native to fast-flowing streams, they’re perfectly adapted to life in high-oxygen environments and are often seen “gliding” along surfaces as they graze on algae.

They’re a great addition for hobbyists wanting something a bit different—and super useful for helping keep tanks clean.

Quick Facts:

  • Scientific Name: Gastromyzon spp. (commonly)
  • Adult Size: ~5–6cm
  • Temperament: Peaceful
  • Tank Size: 60L+
  • Diet: Algae, biofilm, supplemented with wafers & fresh veg
  • Lifespan: 5–8 years

 Care & Setup:

Borneo Suckers thrive in cooler, well-oxygenated tanks with strong water flow. Think river-style setups with smooth rocks, driftwood, and plenty of surface area for algae and biofilm to grow.

They do best in established aquariums where natural food sources are already present.

 Important Notes:

  • Require high oxygen levels and good flow (not your typical still tropical tank)
  • Prefer slightly cooler temps (~20–24°C)
  • Best kept in groups or alongside other peaceful species
  • Can struggle in newly set up tanks without enough natural food

 Paws & Claws Tip:

These guys aren’t just algae eaters—they’re specialists. A mature tank with good flow and natural growth will keep them thriving long-term.
