Electric Blue Acara (Andinoacara pulcher – Electric Blue variety)
The Electric Blue Acara is a stunning selectively bred colour morph of the standard Blue Acara. Known for its intense metallic blue colouring and relatively peaceful temperament (for a cichlid), it has become a favourite in community and semi-aggressive aquariums.
Although the colour form is aquarium-bred, the species originates from slow-moving rivers and waterways in northern South America.
Size & Lifespan
-
Adult Size: 15–20 cm
-
Lifespan: 8–10 years with proper care
-
Temperament: Semi-aggressive, generally peaceful for a cichlid
They are calmer than many Central and South American cichlids, making them suitable for larger community setups.
Appearance
Electric Blue Acaras are known for:
-
Bright, iridescent neon blue body
-
Subtle darker patterning along the flanks
-
Orange edging on dorsal and tail fins (in mature fish)
-
Slight forehead hump in mature males
Their shimmering colour becomes more intense under proper lighting and good water conditions.
Water Parameters
They are fairly hardy but prefer stable conditions:
-
Temperature: 24–28°C
-
pH: 6.5–7.5
-
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard
-
Minimum Tank Size: 200L for a single fish; larger for pairs
Consistency is more important than chasing exact numbers.
Tank Setup
Electric Blue Acaras appreciate:
-
Sand or smooth gravel substrate
-
Driftwood and rocks
-
Moderate planting (they may dig slightly)
-
Open swimming space
-
Good filtration with moderate flow
They may rearrange substrate during breeding but are not excessively destructive.
Tank Mates
They do well with similarly sized, peaceful to semi-aggressive fish.
Suitable tank mates:
-
Larger tetras
-
Silver dollars
-
Peaceful catfish (e.g., bristlenose)
-
Other medium, calm cichlids
Avoid:
-
Very small fish (may be eaten)
-
Highly aggressive cichlids
-
Fin-nippers
They are generally tolerant but can become territorial when spawning.
Feeding
Electric Blue Acaras are omnivorous and not fussy.
Recommended diet:
-
High-quality cichlid pellets
-
Frozen foods (bloodworms, brine shrimp)
-
Occasional live foods
-
Some vegetable-based foods
A varied, protein-rich diet enhances colour and condition.
Breeding
-
Form monogamous pairs
-
Lay eggs on flat surfaces (rocks, slate, driftwood)
-
Both parents guard eggs and fry
-
Fry can be fed baby brine shrimp or finely crushed food
They are attentive parents but can become defensive during spawning.
Why Choose Electric Blue Acaras?
-
Striking electric blue colour
-
More peaceful than many cichlids
-
Good personality and interactive behaviour
-
Suitable for larger community aquariums
They’re an excellent choice for aquarists wanting a showpiece cichlid without the extreme aggression of larger South American species.
