Electric Blue Balloon Ram (Mikrogeophagus ramirezi – Electric Blue Balloon variety)
The Electric Blue Balloon Ram is a selectively bred variant of the German Blue Ram, combining the intense metallic blue colour of the “Electric Blue” strain with the compact, rounded body shape of the “Balloon” form. They are small, vibrant dwarf cichlids best suited to peaceful, well-maintained aquariums.
Because they are heavily line-bred, they are generally more sensitive than standard Rams and require stable water conditions.
Size & Lifespan
-
Adult Size: 5–6 cm
-
Lifespan: 2–4 years (sometimes shorter due to selective breeding)
-
Temperament: Peaceful, shy, mildly territorial when breeding
They are delicate compared to many other cichlids and are not recommended for newly set-up tanks.
Appearance
Electric Blue Balloon Rams are known for:
-
Intense neon blue body with shimmering scales
-
Rounded, compact “balloon” body shape
-
Red or orange highlights around the head and fins
-
Large eyes relative to body size
Their colour is brightest under warm lighting and when kept in optimal water conditions.
Water Parameters (Very Important)
Stability is critical with this variety.
-
Temperature: 27–30°C (they prefer warmer water)
-
pH: 5.5–7.0
-
Hardness: Soft to slightly hard
-
Minimum Tank Size: 60L for a pair
They do poorly in fluctuating temperatures or poor water quality. Excellent filtration and regular maintenance are essential.
Tank Setup
They thrive in:
-
Fine sand substrate
-
Heavily planted tanks
-
Driftwood and leaf litter
-
Gentle water flow
-
Stable, mature aquariums
They appreciate hiding spots and subdued lighting.
Tank Mates
Best kept with calm, peaceful species.
Suitable tank mates:
-
Small tetras (cardinals, rummy nose)
-
Corydoras (that tolerate warm temps)
-
Small rasboras
-
Other peaceful dwarf cichlids (in larger tanks)
Avoid:
-
Aggressive fish
-
Fast, boisterous species
-
Fin-nippers
-
Cool-water species
Because of their sensitive nature, they can be easily stressed by dominant tank mates.
Feeding
They can be picky eaters.
Recommended foods:
-
High-quality micro pellets
-
Frozen bloodworms
-
Brine shrimp
-
Daphnia
Small, frequent feedings are better than large meals.
Breeding
-
Form pairs
-
Lay eggs on flat stones or leaves
-
Both parents guard eggs and fry
-
Fry require very small foods (infusoria, baby brine shrimp)
Breeding balloon varieties can be less consistent compared to standard Rams.
Important Consideration
Due to selective breeding:
-
They may have reduced lifespan
-
They are more prone to stress and disease
-
They require excellent water quality
They are best suited to experienced aquarists who can maintain stable, warm, clean water conditions.
