Kribensis Cichlid (Pelvicachromis pulcher)
The Kribensis Cichlid is one of the most popular and beginner-friendly dwarf cichlids in the aquarium hobby. Native to slow-moving rivers and streams in West Africa (particularly Nigeria and Cameroon), they are well known for their vibrant colours, manageable size, and excellent parenting behaviour.
They are hardy, adaptable, and suitable for both community tanks and breeding setups.
Size & Lifespan
-
Adult Size: 8–10 cm (males slightly larger than females)
-
Lifespan: 5–8 years with proper care
-
Temperament: Generally peaceful; territorial when breeding
Appearance
Kribensis are sexually dimorphic, meaning males and females look different.
Males:
-
Larger and more elongated body
-
More pointed dorsal and tail fins
-
Yellow to olive body with red highlights
Females:
-
Smaller and rounder body shape
-
Bright purple or red belly when in breeding condition
-
More intense overall coloration during spawning
The female’s vibrant purple abdomen is the most distinctive feature and becomes especially bright when ready to breed.
Water Parameters
Kribensis are adaptable but thrive under the following conditions:
-
Temperature: 24–27°C
-
pH: 6.0–7.5
-
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard
-
Minimum Tank Size: 60L for a pair
They tolerate a reasonable range of water conditions, making them suitable for many standard home aquarium setups when properly maintained.
Tank Setup
Kribensis prefer:
-
Sand or fine gravel substrate
-
Caves or hiding spots (essential for breeding)
-
Driftwood and live plants
-
Moderate filtration with gentle water movement
They are cave spawners, so providing multiple hiding areas helps reduce aggression and encourages natural behaviour.
Tank Mates
They generally do well in peaceful community tanks.
Suitable tank mates:
-
Tetras
-
Corydoras
-
Rasboras
-
Small peaceful barbs
Avoid:
-
Large aggressive cichlids
-
Fin-nipping species
-
Very small shrimp (may be eaten)
While normally peaceful, they become protective and territorial during breeding.
Feeding
Kribensis are omnivores and will accept a wide variety of foods:
-
Quality cichlid pellets
-
Flakes
-
Frozen foods (bloodworms, brine shrimp)
-
Occasional vegetable matter
A varied diet helps maintain colour and overall health.
Breeding
Kribensis are one of the easiest cichlids to breed in captivity.
-
They form strong pair bonds.
-
The female lays eggs inside a cave.
-
Both parents guard and care for eggs and fry.
-
Fry can be fed crushed flakes or baby brine shrimp.
They are attentive parents and will actively defend their young, making them fascinating to observe.
