Bristlenose Pleco

Bristlenose Plecos are peaceful, hardy freshwater catfish and a popular addition to tropical community aquariums. Known for their distinctive appearance and algae-grazing behaviour, they spend much of their time exploring surfaces, driftwood and décor throughout the aquarium.

About Bristlenose Plecos

Bristlenose Plecos belong to the genus Ancistrus and originate from freshwater river systems throughout South America.

As they mature, males typically develop prominent bristles around the face and snout, while females generally have fewer, much smaller bristles or none at all.

With their manageable adult size and peaceful nature, Bristlenose are a great alternative to some of the much larger Pleco species.

Aquarium Compatibility

Generally peaceful and suitable for most tropical community aquariums. They can be kept alongside Tetras, Rasboras, Corydoras, Gouramis, Rams, peaceful Barbs and many other non-aggressive tropical species.

Multiple Bristlenose can also be kept together when the aquarium is large enough and provides plenty of separate caves, territories and hiding places.

Aquarium Requirements

Temperature: Approximately 23–27°C
Adult Size: Approximately 10–15cm
Temperament: Peaceful
Minimum Tank Size: Around 75L+, with larger aquariums recommended for adults or multiple Bristlenose.

Provide plenty of driftwood, caves and shaded hiding areas where they can retreat. Good filtration and regular water changes are important for maintaining excellent water quality.

Diet

Bristlenose Plecos are omnivorous grazers and should be provided with a varied diet rather than relying solely on algae or leftover food within the aquarium.

Offer quality sinking algae wafers and pleco foods alongside fresh vegetables such as courgette. Occasional protein-based foods can also be included as part of a balanced diet.

Driftwood is also highly recommended within their aquarium and provides additional surfaces for natural grazing.

FOODS WE RECCOMEND

while Bristlenose Plecos are often purchased as "clean-up fish", they should never be expected to survive purely on algae or leftover food. They are a fish in their own right and require a complete diet, suitable hiding places and good water quality to thrive.

Their peaceful personality, manageable adult size and striking golden long fins make them a fantastic addition to many established tropical aquariums.
